PROBLEMS WITH THE BOAR
Oestrus detection with the help of a live boar can be challenging for farmers and stock-people:
Ensuring sufficient nose-to nose contact for each female requires sexually-motivated boars. However, tiredness or attraction to feed can limit the required sexual motivation.
Young boars may be immature, and not give off sufficient pheromones.
Older boars can be aggressive – which can be dangerous for the farmer and stock-people.
For biosecurity reasons, boars cannot come into specific areas to help the farmer detect oestrus.
There may be no boar available, such as through temporary shortage of boars on the farm or the unfortunate death of a boar.

DIFFICULT FEMALES
For some females, especially young ones, it can be difficult to express the typical signs of oestrus.
