Certain factors can lead to failure to detect oestrus effectively – leading in turn to the risk of poor
reproductive performance, such as increased return-to-oestrus rates and decreased litter sizes.

PROBLEMS WITH THE BOAR

Oestrus detection with the help of a live boar can be challenging for farmers and stock-people:

  • Ensuring sufficient nose-to nose contact for each female requires sexually-motivated boars. However, tiredness or attraction to feed can limit the required sexual motivation.
  • Young boars may be immature, and not give off sufficient pheromones.
  • Older boars can be aggressive – which can be dangerous for the farmer and stock-people.
  • For biosecurity reasons, boars cannot come into specific areas to help the farmer detect oestrus.
  • There may be no boar available, such as through temporary shortage of boars on the farm or the unfortunate death of a boar.

DIFFICULT FEMALES

For some females, especially young ones, it can be difficult to express the typical signs of oestrus.

Such “difficult females” need to be handled with extra care in order to ensure successful heat detection, and particularly to detect the beginning of oestrus and therefore the best time frame for insemination.

THE HUMAN FACTOR

The success of the heat detection process relies strongly on the skill, knowledge and experience of the farmer / stock-person.

Risk factors that could affect oestrus detection success are such as:

  • Compliance with good practice, particularly with difficult females.
  • Some females not showing their sexual behaviour immediately at the first sight and smell of the boar – which means the staff need to take extra time to ensure heat is detected.
  • The need to conduct frequent heat checks in an already busy day.
  • Inexperienced staff or staff rotation.
